What’s the Big Deal about Big Data?

Big Data.  A tired buzzword that, by itself, is not very meaningful. But let’s look at it a little differently.

Today, data is too big, moves too fast, or does not fit into the structures of legacy database architectures.  Alternative approaches to manage, protect, process, and utilize this data are now required. When you look at three key parameters creating the Big Data phenomenon, it is easy to understand how it is greatly influencing an organization’s ability to effectively manage, protect, and utilize their data.

First, the volume of data growth provides new opportunities. Organizations that once could only analyze a sample of key research data can now look at the entire spectrum of information available.

Growth 2020

Second, the variety of data is much greater.  The days of only structured databases with their fixed rows and columns and flat files are long gone.  Now, there is the chatter of social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.), audio and video flows, web server logs, traffic flow sensors, satellite imagery, web page content, GPS trails and the list goes on.STRUCTURED AND UNSTRUCTURED

Third, the velocity or speed of data growth is dramatic. Every 2 days, we create as much information as we did from the beginning of time until 2003 AND we double the amount of information in the entire world in less than 2 years.

The Neola Group’s Big Data experience provides our clients with an understanding of both the infrastructure and the analytical solutions to provide a customized approach that provides short term wins, significant value and improved organizational focus.
